Mardi Gras is coming!
Most New Orleans parades won’t start until around the 19th of February (click here to view the 2011 parade schedule), but many festivities have already begun.
One such festivity is the Mardi Gras Ball...
Mardi Grass balls have been held in Louisiana since at least the 1700s, when the majority of such festivities were hosted by its French inhabitants.
An integral part of these private affairs is the revealing of the reigning King and Queen, whose identities are usually a closely guarded secret until the night of the festivities. Along with this revealing of royalty, there is normally a Debutant presentation where young women are formally introduced to society in beautiful white gowns.
Most official Mardi Gras balls are (and always have been) formal and private affairs, with the only attendees usually being members of the individuals Krewes and their invited guests.
This year I was lucky enough to be invited to the Krewe Bon Coeur Ball by a good friend of mine and her family!
The theme of the ball was "musical families" with each family setting their table to a particular theme.
My friend and her family had decorated their table with The Sound of Music in mind and "a few of their favorite things" as the centerpiece.
When we saw all of the lavish decorations and gowns and then realized we had forgotten our camera in the hotel room we were pretty bummed, but luckily we had our camera
phones on us and were still able to get a few shots of our group.
So what did we miss with out the use of our awesome DSLR?
Well, on top of being unable to get a well lit photo of the cool cats at our table, we missed a lot of good shots of the exquisite gowns worn by the krewe's royalty.
One such gown had an amazing salute to Donny and Marie Osmond going on that I really can't explain with out a photo other than to say, WOW! haha
For those of you thinking, "Boooo, no photos of the gowns!!! Booooo!" Don't stop reading yet. J
On our way out of town we stopped at L’Auberge du Lac for lunch where low-and-behold they had many superb Mardi Gras gowns on display.
This time we didn't forget our camera!
So folks, thats it for my weekend recap.
Until next time, laissez les bons temps rouler!!!
